Background of the study
TikTok lip sync videos in Nigeria have become a prominent medium for phonetic experimentation and creativity. Users adapt global trends to local contexts by altering pronunciation, intonation, and rhythm to suit the demands of lip sync performances. These videos often feature exaggerated enunciation, deliberate mispronunciations, and hybrid accent features that depart from conventional speech norms (Adebayo, 2023). The rapid pace and visual–auditory integration of TikTok foster an environment where phonological variation can flourish, as creators use digital tools to manipulate sound and convey humor, emotion, and identity. This phenomenon reflects broader sociocultural trends, where youth culture and digital media converge to redefine language in dynamic ways (Ibrahim, 2024). The study examines how these creative practices influence phonetic patterns and contribute to the evolution of spoken language in the digital era.
Statement of the problem
Although TikTok lip sync videos are widely popular in Nigeria, research on their phonetic impact is limited. Existing studies have focused more on visual trends than on detailed acoustic and phonological analysis. The lack of systematic examination of how digital performance influences traditional pronunciation norms hinders our understanding of contemporary language evolution. This study aims to bridge this gap by investigating phonetic variations in TikTok lip sync content, assessing both the acoustic features and socio-cultural drivers behind these changes (Chukwu, 2024).

Scope and limitations of the study
The study is confined to TikTok lip sync videos created by Nigerian users and focuses exclusively on phonetic analysis. It does not extend to other forms of digital media or offline speech practices.
